    Porsche 911 Block Identification The serial number is stamped on the vertical surface the type number can be found on the horizontal surface: I think the number you’ve found is the engine serial number look on the flat portion (as pictured above) for the type and we can investigate further.On Porsche 911 (and others) engines there are 2 number which can help identify 911 engines – the two number are found on the passenger (right) side of the fan duct assembly the engine serial number which from ’69 ’81 was 7 number starting with 6xxxxxxFrom 1982 on, it was 8 digits long adding a letter in the third position 6.x…..before 69 it looks like the number might have only been 6 digits long (not confirmed as yet.)the other number will be engine type which will be in the format 901/xx or 911/xx or 930/xx or M64/xx
