Reader Question:
I just graduated from college with a degree in engineering, and while I was in school I got the good student discount on my car insurance. Is there anything special that I can get now that I’m out?
Rose
Yes, there is.
Some insurance companies, like 21st century, offer some very specific discounts, and one of those discounts is for people with degrees in engineering or in a field related to science, like chemistry or math or biology. If you have a bachelor’s degree in a field from these categories, you can get big discounts on your car insurance premiums.
21st Century operates in several states and offers this discount in all of them, including Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon, and Washington. The discount, called the ‘engineering and scientist discount’ can, according to the vice president of corporate relations for the company, Ric Hill, save customers up to 30% on their premiums if they also have a good driving record.
According to statistics, 21st century finds that engineers and others who work in scientific fields are better drivers than the general population. Hill states that engineers are more likely to be accustomed to dealing with details, and because of this they pay closer attention to things around them, a necessary quality to be a good driver.
So, once you have that degree and no longer can use your student discount, don’t fret! It still has a positive effect on your car insurance rates.
Sincerely,
Fashun Guadarrama.
