I have a 1997 Plymouth Neon Sedan. It recently started sputtering, as if it was running out of gas, with an occasional backfire. This occurs when the car is heated up. By that, I mean at running temperature. The Check Engine Light also came on not long after. I took a friend’s advice and put dry gas and fuel injection cleaner in the tank hoping to solve the problem. Well, it hasn’t. I’m a nervous wreck because without transportation, I can lose my job. Hello there Heather,
Thanks for the email. Two things come to mind and I would want to inspect if you were at my shop.
1. Check the spark plugs AND the spark plug wires for wear, replace them as needed especially if there is more than 50,000 miles on them since they were last changed. That s basically a tune up.
2. Check fuel pump pressure lack of proper fuel pressure can also cause symptoms like you describe, but not as easy to test yourself as the spark plug wires are.
Keep me posted as to what happens.

I have the same problem with my 1995 Chevy S-10 Blazer……it is like Jeckyl and Hyde, as soon as it warms up, it starts the RPM dance between 500 and 1500, and than, it might just die.
The Check Engine Light comes on, and than goes off after a few min of this issue…..sometimes, the car sounds like it misfires while the issue happens, or even pauses as though catchin a breath before continuing…..than the car sounds perfect again, no issues, than a few min later, it is acting up again, hence, I call it Jeckyl/Hyde
My Mechanic is goin nuts trying to figure it out, hoping you might have an answer.
