Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency With Diesel Engine?

Hello Austin,
I am considering buying a 1985 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency on eBay.  I know that those Delta 88′S and Ninety Eights are great reliable cars.  This car has 50,457 miles on it.  However, what concerns me is that this car has the LT7 4.3L Diesel Engine.  When I was a kid growing up in the 80′s I always heard that GM and Oldsmobile Diesel motors were no good at all.
I was wondering if that is true? I was wondering if you could tell me from your personal experience if this motor is a reliable motor or not and if you do not know if you could do a little research on this motor?  I have tried researching this motor but I am not having very much luck with it.

Thank you very much for your time and please let me know about it.  This car will be around $4,000.00 dollars and will be an investment but I want to hear your opinion on this particular motor as I have only had gasoline Oldsmobile and were extremely satisfied with them.

Hi There Tom, 

Sorry if I come across rude, but I do not like this idea at all. First, its an older vehicle and honestly GM vehicles from the mid 80′s are not the most reliable. Second, the diesel engine I am not familiar with at all, so I wonder how many other shops or mechanics would be able to assist you, and third I would expect to pay about $1200 for this vehicle…..after being able to drive it in person….not from Ebay.
Last, very very very rarely do I see an automobile as an “investment” or something that holds or makes money, just does not happen very often.
I think a $4K down payment on a 2 year old lease trade in Kia Rio would be a much better option.
Just my opinion.  Have a great New Year!
