Reader Question

I have a 1992 Infiniti G20, manual transmission, that may be (hopefully isn’t) nearing it’s time. But I’ve had a weird problem lately. I can’t get into first or second gear. I can get into any other gear and they work fine, but first and second just aren’t happening, and as you can imagine, that’s making it difficult when starting off.

Do you know why this may be? If so, what can I do about it? If there’s nothing I can do about it on my own, about how much do you think it will cost me to fix it?

It just started today, and it did it in the past for a couple days, but then acted fine. I’m hoping it does the same, but nonetheless, I’d like to know the cause of it.

Thanks,
Garon

Hey there Garon,

The first thing I would do is check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder reservoir which should be next to the brake fluid reservoir…and they take the same brake fluid.

If the clutch cylinder is very low you either have not been getting a proper oil change and they have not checked all your under hood fluids OR you have a leak in the clutch system somewhere and the fluid has leaked out.

You can always get a fast lube place to check this fluid for you and top it off, probably free of charge if you are uncertain where to put the fluid.

If the fluid is full, you might have an internal clutch problem and its time to replace the clutch or there could be something wrong with the clutch master cylinder itself.
Blessings,

Austin Davis
