I Have a 1999 Buick Century, it has about 200,000 miles on it. I took it to a shop to get my Manifold Intake Gasket Fixed, and I Told them about my car having this jerking sensation. They said they would look at it but they never said a thing to me about it so I continued driving it, the jerking became worse until the car wouldn’t go any higher that 30 miles an hour.

Turns out I had a leak in my transmission, and I had been driving it without any oil. So I had someone rebuilt my transmission, the car now runs but The jerking is back, it has trouble shifting from 1st into 2nd gear. At about the 20mph mark the car kind of jerks like someone has a rope tied to the back of the car and is trying to pull me backwards.

Its not a strong jerk and it only pulls once, but it is always right at the 20mph, all of the other gears shift perfectly. I can’t seem to get a hold of the guy who fixed it. But I was wondering if you could be so nice as to tell me what could be wrong.

Do you think he could have not rebuilt the transmission right? Do you think If I got a transmission oil change it would help? When the guy gave me the car back he said I would need a transmission oil change in a month. I Spent a lot of money to get my transmission rebuilt and I don’t have much money left so if it is a serious problem do you know a simple and/or inexpensive way I could stop the jerking?

Hey there Crystal,

I dont think changing the transmission fluid will have anything to do with this…..the fluid should be brand new. He suggested you change the fluid in a month just encase there are any metal shavings or any other dirt or debris that is still floating around inside the transmission from the repair.

I would think you could have a transmission adjustment problem, that any transmission shop can help adjust for you, or you might have an engine problem like a bad spark plug wire causing an engine missfire….which can feel like a transmission problem.

I would find another transmission shop and have one of the employees go for a ride around the block with you so they feel this problem. Hopefully this is just an adjustment issue which can be easily corrected.

Okay I will let you know what the transmission people say. Im a little worried to drive it though, you don’t think it will die before I can get it somewhere do you? And if it does do you have a quick remedy I can use to atleast get it to the shop? Ive heard trans-x works well for transmissions.

Im afraid I cant really offer anything else….but DO NOT use ANY kind of additive in this transmission, they wont help, and you will void what ever warranty you have. I do highly suggest you have the transmission fluid LEVEL checked and topped off with transmission fluid as needed.

I have a 1994 Buick Lesabre that dies at random times. it will run fine then the motor will shut off and oil, temp, and the other normal warning light come on. It usually starts right back up, but some times it will run rough for 15 seconds or the rpms will fluctuate a bit.

On a typical run to the store (bout 1-to 1 1/2 mile in the city) it may happen only once if at all. Other times i can happen every block or so. i have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, the timing chain and gears, water pump, idle air control, (cleaned out the throttle port where the IAC is located)

Any possible ideas you have the might cause this problem would be greatly appreciated. its my daughters car and she isnt able to use it beacuase of this.

Hey there Daren,

Wow man, you have replace just about everything on this vehicle. This is a VERY common complaint on these vehicles, and 9 times out of 10 a faulty crankshaft position sensor is the culprit. Did you use an A/C Delco sensor by chance? Before I spent more money, I would install a genuine Delco crank sensor just to rule out the possibility of a faulty new sensor…..which I have seen before, although rare.

I would also do a “tap test” on your ECM computer. With the engine running in park gain access to the computer under the passenger glove box and lightly tap on the surface of the computer with your fist. If you notice any change in engine running replace the computer with a rebuilt unit you can get from a local auto parts store.

Also, I would look at the ignition module, located under the ignition coil pack. I would assume you have the three part ignition coil system with the flat ignition module underneath.

Make sure the connections to the coils and the module are in good shape and there is no corrosion. When the module fails it will produce erratic symptoms like you describe but usually the engine will not restart easily since the module overheated and needs to cool down before things work again.

Those are my 3 top suggestions, let me know how things work out.

Hi, I have a 1999 Buick Park Avenue with about 140,000 and I have been noticing a slight “jerk” like someone is tapping slightly on the brakes while the cruise control is engaged.

This only happens for a few seconds and there seems to be no regular pattern to it. I very seldom notice it without the cruise on. My local non-Buick mechanic is reccomending a tune-up.

His rationale is that the cylinders are missing and it is more noticable in low RPMs and constant speed i.e. cruise. Today on the freeway with the cruise set at 76 and about 2200 RPM I did not notice it. Do you
think he is correct, or do you think it may be the transmission as I fear?

Hi Tyler, I think I would replace the spark plugs and spark plug WIRES first and see what happens. Worn our/bad spark plug wires can cause problems like this and it is a pretty inexpensive place to start.

If you still have problems after replacing the spark plug wires, I would take it to an automatic transmission shop and have them take a test drive with you and get their opinion. Do NOT “flush” the transmission or use any transmission fluid additives without talking to the transmission shop first. You can make things WORSE!

Sounds like your ignition system is working and you do have a spark at the spark plugs……..so I can only assume you are not getting fuel from your pump. Since the pump is new, I would back up and check the fuel pump relay and fuses.

The relay MAY be up near the passenger headlight area, I don’t remember for sure. Use a voltmeter to see if you have power going to your fuel pump……if no power, follow the wires from the pump forward under the hood until you find the relay. Also check fuses, you probably have a separate fuel pump fuse.

You probably have a bad blower module , which I believe is outside under the hood in the middle of the firewall on your ca .or at least it is on a Cadillac which is similar. This might be a dealer item only, you might want to visit your local dealer part department and talk to them about it, they will make a print out of the location if you buy the part from them. I think its pretty expensive, so make sure that is the problem before you just buy it and not be able to return it.
