Reader Question: I love your website and your newsletter and I was hoping to get your opinion on car insurance for my teen driver. I am about to get an online rate quote and wanted to know if you had any words of wisdom for me before I did?

Much appreciative of your time,

Cathy B. Tulsa OK

Howdy Cathy,

Thanks for the kind words!

I answered a similar email question the other day, so I will reiterate what I told that visitor...It also applies to your situation.

Your insurance rate depends on many factors.

1. Age and sex of the driver

2. Driving record of driver and how long this person has been driving

3. City in which the driver lives

4. Type of vehicle being insured

Now there are also discounts you might be eligible for, and these discounts will vary greatly from insurance carrier to carrier so it really pays to ask around and compare rates.

Double check all the options of the vehicle being insured, make note of the air bag and anti lock brake features and anti theft devices available. You will want all the available discounts possible. You might also want to ask about limited use discounts if this driver is only going to and from home and school or a part time job.

For the best in cheap teen car insurance start your online rate quote comparison via the zip code form on the right and request a $1,000 or $1,500 deductible amount. The higher the better. You only pay the deductible when the claim is paid by YOUR insurance company, so don't fret to much about that high number. The savings in annual premium will be more than the deductible amount in 2-3 years.

You will get quotes from large well known carriers as well as smaller carriers you might not be as familiar with. Talk to your regular auto mechanic AND a few well known body shops in your area and ask them about these smaller insurance companies.

As as body shop owner I sometimes prefer to work with these smaller insurance companies than the larger ones. If you need to make a claim, there is a good chance a body shop will be doing the repairs, so it would be nice to know which company your repair shop has a good working relationship with.

Blessings,

Austin Davis
