Reader Question Hey Austin, I need to find a way to get cheep car insurance for my new Jeep, I am a college student on a limited budget but I also don't want to buy crappy coverage either. Before I get a quote from your site, what should I be looking for or asking the agents for to get the lowest possible rate I can?

Hey there Amber....I like that, you need Cheep Jeep Car Insurance! I hope you typed it that way to be funny, if not....you need to get your tuition money back. :)

There are a few simple things you should ask the agent when they talk to you, or when you fill out the form for the online rate quote. Here are the ways I suggest you try to get "cheep car insurance".

1. Raise your deductible as high as you possibly can....and feel comfortable about it. I carry a $1,000 deductible on my personal vehicles. You only pay this deductible amount when A) you file a claim or have an accident B) if you have an accident YOU have to be at fault and YOUR insurance company has to take responsibility and pay the claim for all parties involved in the accident.

So if you have a clean driving record and you are a safe driver...you should not have anything to worry about and you will save a lot of money on car insurance premiums each year to help pay for college! :)

2. Ask for discounts. I am sure you will get at least a student discount as things stand now, but you might be able to get a "limited use" discount if you can prove your vehicle sits in the dorm parking lot most of the time and when you do drive it is just for short trips to the store for food etc. etc.

3. Join a credit union for a checking or savings account. Sometimes credit union membership can help reduce your rates, and interest earned at a credit union is usually higher than just a normal bank would be. You will benefit in both ways.
