2000 Honda Civic DX stalls while driving...
« on: July 17, 2008, 11:39:44 PM »
I have a 2000 Honda Civic which twice has stalled (both times while decelerating.) There's no engine noise or warning and the car takes 5-10 minutes to restart. The starter turns over but for the first few minutes there's no ignition.
After the first time I took it to Honda who gave it a clean bill of health...it stalled mid intersection the next day.

Any ideas where to look? I can think of a few million so I'm hoping someone out there can narrow it down!

Thanks!

I think just for grins I would clean your throttle body.

A dirty throttle body can cause rough idle, dying at idle and deceleration........but usually the engine will start right back up.  If you have to wait to start the engine again that is usually a sign of an electrical component that has overheated and needs time to cool down before working again.  first thing that comes to mind here is the distributor.  Honda had a problem in the late 90's with their distributors, and the ignitor inside the distributor causing the engine not to start.

I think that recall is long gone by now, but you might still call the dealership service department and give them your VIN number and ask if this vehicle was part of the distributor/ignitor recall from years back.  the parts are expensive, so it's not something I would just guess at...the throttle body is cheap to clean and should be part of your regular maintenance anyway, it will run smoother start quicker with a clean throttle body.

I have a Honda Accord and the other week it stalled on me in the middle of the road!!! It was very scary and I was by myself of course so I had no clue what to do. Since I don't have AAA or any other roadside assistance, it was a nightmare. I found out that all it needed was a quick battery jump start. Would have been nice if someone could have come out and helped me. I am not ready to give up on my car just yet but I'm thinking I'm gonna need roadside service incase this happens again. Any ideas where to look?????

I would have your battery "load tested" and your alternator "out put" tested. You could have a bad battery or a weak alternator.

Most cell phone companies have road side assistance built into your phone, so call and check on that.  BUT, I HIGHLY recommend you get a relationship with a local mechanic who also has a towing service or uses a trusted 24 hour service.  This way your car gets towed back to your trusted mechanic, and you don't have to pay them cash on the scene, since they can bill your mechanic who can collect from you.

There is not much a "road side mechanic" can really do on the side of the road these days...a relationship with a towing service is a much better and safer/more economical idea.

I found out what the problem was with my Honda Civic...I had an after market Clifford Auto Immobilizer that was defective. The unit (even though it says in the manual it won't)damaged the ignition components causing the car to stall at random and be difficult to restart. Once the immobilizer was removed and a stock ignition harness put in my Civic has been working fine!

Thanks!
