96 Monte Carlo Brake light question
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:36:47 AM »
The only brake light that will illuminate constantly is the third brake light. The actual brake lights only work on occasion usually after i have driven down the road a mile or two, but as of late this has not been the case. Is this the turn signal switch inside the steering wheel. I think if I remember correctly the brake lights were operated through the turn signal switch.
Anybody got some input beside what I would like to do( Attach this MF'er to my Jeep Wrangler and find the biggest hill that ends with about a 1000 ft. drop off a cliff) Laughing , thanks, Mike

Just a thought...

Have you tried checking the wires that run from the lights to see if there is any chaffing or breaks?

It is the complete turn signal set up. The entire assembly is loose, if I pull it  back just enough to make the connection, the brake lights come on. I went out and tried after I made the earlier posting and sure enough it was the turn signal connection.
Now I think I have to take off the steering wheel to access the where the turn signal lever is mounted. Thanks for the reply though. Later, Mike

By the way I had checked the wiring and connection in the rear and everything checked out, thats when I decided to get some outside input on this site. At first I thought it might be the plunger on the brake pedal...but it all checked out!

The brake lights run through the turn signal switch and could be the culprit.

You also have a brake light relay and it could have bad contacts. I think it's under the hood in that power distribution box near the battery.
