Author Topic: 97 MONTE CARLO Z34 CONTINUOUS FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT  (Read 3468 times)

My questions is on my 97 Monte Carlo z34 3.4 engine with 100,000 miles, the check engine light is flashing in a steady on & off pattern and at the same time I noticed a rough idle, replaced the FRONT spark plugs and wires, then car wouldn't start at all, cranks but won't start, battery checks out good, replaced timing belt a few months ago and replaced back plugs and wires at about 50,000 miles, didn't want to do backs again because they are so hard to reach and wnated to see first if this could even be the problem, from reading it looks like the flashing light is maybe some kind of misfire problem?  Any help or advice would be appreciated!  Nancy

Nancy,

Take it to a shop and have them check the catalytic converter. A FLASHING check engine light indicates a SERIOUS problem. From your description, it sounds as though the converter is bad. Don't drive it until you get this checked.

Have the codes read and post back.  The flashing light means there is a problem that is deteriorating the converters.

Guys,

I thought that on OBDII that a flashing MIL means there is a misfire?

Anyway,

Merry Christmas!

Flashing light means there is a problem that is doing damage to the converter.  The most common fault is a misfire.
