car slows down quickly when releasing gas pedal
on: September 07, 2004, 04:39:43 PM
Hi. I have a 1976 280Z that grabs or slows down quickly at speeds above 50mph (80kph) when I take my foot off the gas pedal instead of a normal unnoticeable slow down.

it sounds normal to me.  you might want to make sure the transmission isn't down-shifting.  the other thing is to make sure the brakes aren't grabbing.

You haven't given any details so any of these possibilities may apply:

a) Your car is not in top gear when you start to coast.
b) You're used to automatic transmission and are unaccustomed to the normally higher engine braking from cars with manual transmission.
c) A brake is dragging. See if any of the drums or rotors seem hotter than usual.
