which engine?

did onstar tell u the code number? if not ask them for the exact code number, thatll be a big help.

if they cant or wont tell u, run the car by one of the parts stores, most of them will scan the computer for free. then post back and let us know which code number came up.

does the temp gauge show the engine running cooler then normal after u drive it for awhile?

theres a few things that can set this code, but the most common is a thermostat thats stuck open and not letting the engine warm up fast enough. to check it, take it out and look at it. at room temp it should be closed all the way. if its open, even partialy, replace it. in fact, even if it looks ok u may wanna replace it anyways. its a cheap part, and some times a thermostat thats starting to fail can stick intermittantly, so even if it looks ok when u look at it, it could act up some times when its in the engine.

Yes it will.  Some of those tests the computer performs to check on the emissions systems on your vehicle won't run unless the engine is up to operating temperature.  Another factor is that a colder engine uses more fuel and wears out faster.

not to mention that using more fuel = more emissions out the tail pipe.

One important factor is that the wife or GF likes to keep their footsies warm while they are driving.  With a cool running engine the heater won't be operating at maximum performance.  The last thing you need is another complaint stacked on to the hundreds you already have.
