These are pictures of a valve cover and PCV valve on a 1996 Chevy Blazer with a V-6 engine.
On V (V8, or V6) engines the valve cover mount at a slant on the engine. This slant causes the oil to pool at the bottom of the cover. The valve cover gasket very rarely leaks at the top of the valve cover.

The valve cover where the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve inserts into the hole at the top of the cover.

A new PCV valve. The two black plastic tubes at the top are what the vacuum hoses from the engine attach to. This vacuum is what removes excess pressure that is built up inside the engine.

The vacuum hole at the bottom of the PCV valve. This hole can become restricted with dirt and oil sludge due to infrequent oil changes. If restricted the pressure inside the engine becomes too great for the oil seals and gaskets to handle.
