COMPARE AUTO INSURANCE RATES
Are You OVERPAYING?
Zip Code:

Reader question: I need a little help, my 17 year old son is ready to start driving and I am scared to death about how much insurance will cost for him. How can I get cheap teen auto insurance for this beginner driver?

Liz

Hey there Liz, I feel your pain! Your teen beginner driver is not old enough to get his own policy, so you will have to add him to yours and be responsible for him financially, but you have already been doing that for 17 years....right?  So, the rates will still be HIGH with him added to your policy, but will be much more if he tried to get coverage without you.

I would think about combining all your other insurances into one company, I.E. move your home and personal liability policies to one carrier which will usually give you a price break for combining coverages.

A few other things I would do to help lower your rate:

1. Talk to your agent about which cars are more economical to insure....although those vehicles might not be what your son wants to drive. Also ask about what features about the vehicle will save you money...I.E. an alarm, passenger air bags etc.

2. Raise your deductible, this is the fastest and easiest way for anyone to lower their auto insurance rates.  I personally carry a $1,000 deductible on all my vehicles and I would never make a claim for anything less than that amount, and my low rates are a reward for doing so.

With the money you save in your annual premium for carrying this high deductible you can invest in a mutual fund ear marked for emergencies.

3. Take defensive or driver training class. Most insurance carriers will give a small discount to your teen driver for passing this class.  This class probably makes for a safe driver as well as they are informative, educational and beneficial.

4. Encourage your teen driver to make good grades in school as some auto insurance companies will give discounts to good student drivers.

5. Spend some time online and compare rates and do not be afraid to ask for discounts!  You have heard the saying, the squeaky wheel gets the grease right....ask ask ask...you will probably receive.

I love Comparison Market, they do most of the work for you.  Complete the rate quote form above and they will match your info with 3-5 agents in your area.  Then it's your job to get those agents to compete with each other for your business.  Trust me, it works!

Blessings,

Austin Davis
