Nissan PathFinder – Valve Cover Leak

Austin Davis, February 6, 2007September 27, 2014

Reader Question

I have a Nissan Pathfinder (V6 engine) with approximately 195,000 miles. The valve cover gaskets have been leaking for a while now. I know the leak must be getting worse because I am now starting to smell the burning oil. What is involved in changing the valve cover gaskets for my vehicle? What is an approximate cost for this repair?

What is involved in changing the rear main seal? What is an approximate cost for this repair, too?

Thank you for your attention and assistance. I look forward to your reply.

Hey there

The valve cover gaskets can be a large job on this vehicle and could cost you $450-490 depending on the labor rate in your area. I would quote 5.5 hours at $75 an hour plus the gaskets. It might be done in less time, but my software program suggests I charge 5.5 hours

The rear main seal could be about the same, maybe $100 more in labor time.

I would expect an engine with this mileage to leak some oil……not drip, but seep oil on the hot engine and produce a smell or smoke. Make sure the PCV system is working correctly, use thicker weight engine oil like 50 weight Castrol and use an over the counter oil additive like Engine Restore, which you can buy at your local auto parts store.

Blessings,

Austin Davis
