Car insurance: agent or direct?

Austin-1, June 21, 2007

Reader question:

So, when I’m getting my car insurance, should I go through an agent or buy direct? What’s the difference?

Karen

There is a difference, and the decision you should make depends on your circumstances and preferences.

Some people don’t realize that there’s more than one way to get their insurance, and really, to tailor your car insurance experience to something that best fits you and is most convenient, it’s important to consider the options. In the end, it all depends on your personal preference.

You want someone who will give you the best rate with the least trouble. If you combine your car insurance coverage with that for your house and business, you might better opt for a local insurance agent. They’re more able to help you tailor your needs. However, direct buying is especially convenient now that you’re able to handle all of your insurance needs from your home computer through some of the major companies.

If you basically know what you’re doing and what you want, and have experience with claims and other insurance things, buying direct from a company is the best way to go because it’s quicker and easier. However, if you’re unsure of your step and maybe don’t know what kind of insurance you need, an agent can personalize his service for you and take you through the process step by step in ways a company cannot.
