Getting Rid Of Smells In Car

Austin Davis, September 21, 2012September 30, 2014

READER QUESTION

Hey Austin, love your site and your weekly emails you send me, thank you in advance you have saved me a lot of money over the years.

Question. My car has this musty type of odor to it and I have tried many “odor eater” sprays and the smell goes away for a short time then returns. Do you have any suggestions that I might try?

Thanks
Holly

Hi there Holly

Well I am glad I have been able to help you learn about auto repair, and save some money in the process. Thanks for being a loyal newsletter subscriber.

On the smell in your car issue, yes, I do have a few suggestions for you and I made a short video that might help you eliminate that musty/moldy smell you are experiencing.

I apologize in advance for the video being sideways….:(

The all purpose cleaner and odor eater product that I am using in the video is called Tuff Stuff, and is available at most auto parts stores, Walmart and I see it in my local grocery store in the auto related section. You might want to test a small section of your carpets and seats first just to make sure it does not change the color. I have used cases and cases of Tuff Stuff over the years and have not had a problem with it.

Remember to have the air conditioner fan on HI speed and in the MAX or recirculate selection so the Lysol or perfume or Tuff Stuff can make contact with the evaporator core and kill the mold or fungus that might be growing on it.
