How to Install a Short Throw Shifter?

Installing a short throw shifter can enhance the performance and feel of your vehicle’s gear shifting. Here’s a general guide on how to install one:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Short throw shifter kit
  • Wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Jack and jack stands (for safety)
  • Thread locker (optional)

Steps:

1. Prepare the Vehicle:

  • Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Ensure the vehicle is in gear or in “Park” for automatic transmissions.

2. Raise the Vehicle:

  • Use a jack to lift the car, then support it securely on jack stands. Safety is crucial here.

3. Access the Shifter Assembly:

  • Locate the shifter assembly inside the vehicle’s cabin. This usually involves removing the center console or access panels to reach the shifter.

4. Remove the Old Shifter:

  • Detach any linkages or cables connected to the shifter.
  • Unbolt the shifter from the transmission tunnel using the appropriate tools.
  • Carefully remove the old shifter assembly.

5. Install the New Short Throw Shifter:

  • Place the new short throw shifter in position, aligning it properly.
  • Use the provided hardware to secure the shifter to the transmission tunnel. Ensure it’s tightened securely.

6. Reattach Linkages/Cables:

  • Connect any linkages or cables to the new shifter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

7. Test the Shifter:

  • With the car still safely raised on stands, test the new shifter. Engage each gear to ensure proper functionality and smooth shifting.

8. Reassemble the Interior:

  • Put back the center console or any panels removed earlier to access the shifter.

9. Lower the Vehicle:

  • Carefully lower the car from the jack stands.

10. Test Drive:

  • Take the vehicle for a test drive in a safe area. Ensure the gears engage smoothly and that the shifter feels comfortable.

Tips:

  • Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions that come with the short throw shifter kit. Different cars and shifters may have specific installation steps.
  • Some short throw shifter kits might require adjustments or fine-tuning after installation for optimal performance.
  • Applying thread locker to the bolts during installation can prevent them from loosening over time.

If you’re not experienced with working on cars, it might be a good idea to have a professional mechanic perform the installation to ensure it’s done correctly and safely.
