Shopping for cheap car insurance

Austin-1, July 5, 2007

Reader question:

How do I shop for cheap car insurance?

Maribel

Don’t you hate it?

I mean, shopping for car insurance. It isn’t like shopping for a car. There’s no excitement and nice, new, shiny thing that you get to take home at the end. You’re shopping for something necessary. It’s boring, it’s complicated, and it’s important. All you get is a piece of paper on the end. However, considering it’s required by law and very important when it comes to protecting your assets, it’s something that you have to do and might as well know how to do. So long as you know what you’re doing, you can get it over with as soon as possible.

  • Know what you need. Do you have a new car that needs fuller coverage? Will you be getting medical payment coverage? What about comprehensive and collision? Does your financer require gap insurance? Or do you have a used car that only needs the minimum required by the state?
  • Know what’s being offered. Go online to one of those websites that offers comparisons of quotes between companies. You can start off with an idea of who you want, and make a list of companies to look further into.
  • Know what you have. Make sure you have all your information ready that will be requested of you when you sign up for your policy. Get the make, model, year, and VIN number of your car. Have any former claims and traffic tickets ready to reveal.
  • Know what you can get. Before you go into the office, research what kind of discounts you’re eligible for, because you’ll want to take advantage of these.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
