Reader question:
What kinds of rights do I have when I’m filing a car insurance claim?
Beth
All kinds, Beth.
The rights that you have, though, depend on the contract that you had drawn up with your car insurance company. This is why it is important to read the fine print and know what rights you are specifically given in written detail by your company. To avoid problems in the future, read your policy and know it, and if you have any problems with the rights stated then contact your auto insurance provider and complain. Don’t wait until it’s time to file a claim before looking at your policy.
It’s also important to know what kinds of rights are afforded to you by law. It may seem, due to high insurance rates, that car insurance companies live under a law of their own, but that is not the case. There are certain regulations and requirements by law that vary depending on the state your in as to how an insurance company has to deal with claims and how it must treat its customers. To find out more about your state’s auto insurance laws, contact your state insurance department.
